What is it?

The Doorway Page Management System is designed to be used as a means to provide additional visibility for a user's web site in the major search engines. It accomplishes this by providing search engine optimized doorway pages that are designed to reside in a separate directory from the web site's main pages.

The Doorway Page Management System provides search engine tailored doorway pages for each keyword phrase you provide it. Since each search engine is different, it uses different strategies for each search engine and creates individual doorway pages for each search engine. Each page is generated based upon the statistics for keyword density and amount of text of each section of the doorway page (meta tags, body text, alt tags, etc.) for the following search engines:

• altavista
• excite
• google
• hotbot
• infoseek
• lycos
• nlsearch

Installation

1. First, fire up your ftp program and log on. Make sure you are uploading in "BINARY" mode, if you upload in Ascii, nothing will work. Go to the cgi-bin directory of your website from within the ftp program. Now, select the "dpm.zip" file from your hard drive and upload it to the server.
2. Next, telnet or ssh onto the server and change directories into the site's cgi-bin directory.
3. Unpack the zip file in the site's cgi-bin directory.
4. Next, open the file "dpm_buildit.cgi" in a text editor. Change the first line of the file to reflect the location of your perl interpreter. If you aren't sure, ask your host, they should know, and if they don't, you really don't want to be hosting with them anymore. The default is "/usr/bin/perl".
5. Set the permissions to "dpm_buildit.cgi" to 700 so that it may be executed by issueing the following command:
   chmod 700 dpm_buildit.cgi
6. Execute "dpm_buildit.cgi" from the cgi-bin within the telnet or ssh session to install the Doorway Page Management system.
7. Next, open the file "dpm_manager.cgi" in a text editor. Change the first line of the file to reflect the location of your perl interpreter.

How to Use

1. Bring up the Doorway Page Manager (dpm_manager.cgi) from your favorite browser by entering the correct path to the program. This would be something like "http://www.your-domain.com/cgi-bin/dpm_manager.cgi".
2. Once inside the manager, follow the instructions found under Help for the Setup and the Creation functions of the manager. Upon completion, your site will be ready.
3. Lastly, you'll need to submit the search engine specific hallway pages to the individual search engines. They in turn will spider the hallwya page and pick out the individual doorway pages for further spidering.

Limitations and Restrictions

• Requires Perl 5 to have been installed.
• User must have access to their own cgi-bin library.
• User must have access to their site via telnet or ssh.
