How to Follow Up on Your Work
It is extremely important to follow up on your website submissions. Because the directories in the search engines are so dynamic, follow up is necessary. Some things to keep in mind for following up on your submissions are:
1. Keep detailed notes on when you submitted each page and to what search engines you submitted to. Also note when you're at the search engine how long their current wait time is to index a site. That way, if AltaVista states that they index pages within 2-4 days and doesn't, you can resubmit a few days after the time period if your pages don't show up in the listings. Staying on top of situations can reduce the time to get listed on problematic searc engines. It's not unusual to go months without ever getting listed on certain search engines.
2. Resubmit and/or send an e-mail if you don't get listed in the expected amount of time. Some sites require that you send them an e-mail to resubmit a page. Other sites prefer to have you resubmit the page. Review each search engine's rules and requirements.
3. The best thing you can do is to minimize the work it takes to monitor these problems by using a tool such as The Search Engines Solution.
