Search engine positioning is the backbone of an internet based business. One of the keys to successful search engine positioning is doorway pages. Doorway pages are specially designed web page used specifically for the purpose of getting high rankings in the search engines. Unfortunately there are many webmasters out there who also strive for those top rankings in the search engines. One of the techniques they use to gain these rankings is to do a search for the keyword phrase they are targeting. They will copy the source code off that pages that they find at the top of the listings. Then they modify it a tad more, change the company name and upload it to their server for themselves. Lastly they submit the new doorway page to the search engines and get top rankings using the code that they have stolen from your page.

Preventing Theft

You can prevent search engine position theivery by using a CGI script known as a "cloaking script" or "stealth script" on your server These scripts can detect whether the requestor (viewer) of your doorway page is a regular person using a browser or a search engine using a spider or bot. The script will serve a normal page if the requestor is a regular person or serve a the doorway page ff the requestor is a search engine.

There are several benefits to using a "cloaking script" or "stealth script". You get to keep your top ranking in the search engine while unethical webmasters (trying to steal your code) get your regular main page. Also, your customers avoid having to look at any unappealing doorway pages and are brought straight to your main page.

Stealth Technology Problems

A problem with many of these scripts is that they are easily detectable by search engines. Some search engines will not index pages that they think were generated by CGI scripts. Database-driven web sites are known to have problems being ranked by search engines. Any stealth script you use to protect your search engine rankings needs to be undetectable by the search engines.

If you see an web page address (URL) in a search engine listing and click on it, and the web page address (URL) in the location box of your browser is not the same as the one you clicked on, there may be a stealth script involved that is redirecting you to another page instead of actually serving you a page with the URL you clicked on. This is important because the search engines can detect this. JavaScript and meta-tag redirect is another thing to watch out for. You can tell this is happening when you see a web page load, and then an instant later, a different URL appears in the location box in your browser and you are redirected to another page. Also, it is important not to have ".pl" or ".cgi" as a file extension in the web page address (URL). A search engine would logically interpret such a file as being a CGI script. The web page address (URL) also should not point to a cgi-bin directory. Any of these types of methods could cause a search engine to remove your page from its database or reduce its ranking significantly.
